Typeform Review: How Worthwhile Is This Survey Tool In Business?

  • Creating an online form can be a pain if you don't know what you're doing. There are dozens of elements that you need to deal with, in order to design something that both looks good and functions just right.

    With so many form builders available in the marketplace, it can be tough to understand which one is right for you. With many feedback forms promising the world but not delivering, finding the right tool can take time.

    Enter Typeform, which claims to help solve the problem by making designing complex forms easier. In this article, I'm going to review the features provided by this form creator and provide my opinion on whether or not it's worth getting your hands on.

    Creating Your Account

    Creating an account on Typeform is very easy. You can sign up either through your Google or Microsoft account, or directly on their website. 

    Once you've done that, all that's left for you is to complete the short user profile quiz where they ask some questions about your profession, primary industries of interest, and so on.

    The questions are pretty much self-explanatory, and you get introduced to one of the great features of Typeform. This is the ability to use keyboard shortcuts to quickly power through the survey tool questions.

    After answering these initial questions, you'll be all set and ready to go.

    Building Your First Form

    The first thing you'll notice when it's time to create beautifully designed forms is that there's a lot of available templates for you to choose from.

    Whether you are dealing with forms in the research or registration niche, trying to create an irresistible lead magnet, are interested in creating general quizzes, want to deal with any kind of reporting, or pretty much anything in between, you’ll surely find templates to help you get things done.

    You can always try to come up with something from scratch (which we’ll deal with later), but if you don’t, there’s something already pre-set for you.

    These templates also ensure that you manage to get the look, feel, and functionality of your form just right, especially as you are starting out.

    This is something to keep in mind because it ensures that once people start filling out your forms, they will be able to focus on the form filling, rather than get bogged down by unimportant details.

    As an example, this is what comes up when you click on the 'employee engagement survey'.

    You also get handy statistics about the number of questions involved and the average time it takes to answer a particular survey on the left-hand side. 

    This makes it easy to know how long potential respondents will need to go through the questions you send them.

    At this point, you can choose to get started with your chosen template, choose another template or start from scratch.

    For this review, I will click on 'start from scratch' to explore the full features that Typeform offers me.

    Creating A Form From Scratch

    The first thing I'll have to do when starting a form from scratch is provide some information to the form builder about what I will be creating.

    Since I'm using this account for the first time for this tutorial, Typeform offers me a tour of the highlights, so I'll know exactly where everything is.

    With that said, I'm going to go at it alone, so I press the 'no thanks' button and I’m ready to get started.

    The User Interface

    Here are the items you can immediately see once you're on the screen that allows you to create a form from scratch. 

    These items are key to building a form just the way you want it.

    The contents of your form

    On the left-hand side, you can see the contents of your form. This contains a sequential list of the questions that will show up when your form is live. Thinking about your form as a data collection tool is useful when defining the order your questions should appear in.

    The Preview Screen

    Next, we have the main screen, which gives you a detailed preview of each question in the form. You can see a description on the top left, followed by a question and a call to action button.

    On the right-hand side of this portion, there is a picture that comes included from the start. This image can obviously be replaced by either another image or a video, depending on your specific needs.

    Question Settings

    Looking at the right-hand side menu, there are all the settings that you can customize.

    First, you can choose the type of question that best fits what you're after.

    There are tons of options here, including:

    • short text
    • multiple choice
    • phone number
    • statement
    • file upload
    • Calendly
    • payments
    • and more.

    You can set different settings for the question type, including deciding whether the user is required to answer that particular question as well as the maximum number of characters a user is allowed to enter.

    Next, you can change the layout of your question. Any changes you make will automatically be reflected in the preview you see in the middle of your screen.

    If I now choose a different type of question, say the multiple choice one, different settings will appear. This fine level of detail allows you to really define the functionality provided by your survey form.

    The Question Design

    Apart from the question types, you can also click on the design tab on the right-hand side menu and choose different designs available for Typeform's gallery.

    As always, any changes you make are immediately previewable, ensuring that you're happy with the results.

    The Question Logic

    You can use this section to define the flow of your questions. You can set the order in which questions are asked, as well as how they are answered.

    You have the option to show/hide questions as you please, which is a great way to keep the flow going.

    Branching and calculation settings allow you to set the logic that your form follows, which can be helpful to get the most relevant results from your survey.

    Here's a great example to understand how this works.

    Above, you can see that if a user chooses ‘not so well’ when asked how their day is going, they will then jump to a question that asks ‘What can I do to make your day better?’.

    Alternatively, if the user chooses ‘terrific’ when asked about their day, they are then taken to a question that states, ‘Glad to hear! What’s the best thing that happened to you today?’.

    Upon saving any changes you’ve made, the workflow will be updated, making it easy to understand the flow of your survey.

    Further logic can be set when it comes to both the outcome of quizzes and the points that are assigned to each answer.

    With the outcome quiz option, you can get Typeform to store specific answers to be used at the end of the quiz.

    With the score quiz option, you can assign specific points depending on the chosen answers.

    This allows you to take action based on the cumulative score that a user gets at the end of the quiz.

    Further Settings

    By clicking on the cog icon that is furthest on the right, you'll be able to get access to more configurable settings.

    This makes it easy to define the following:

    • Whether your form is open for answers
    • Notifications that you'll get when people complete answering your form
    • Helpful messages that users will see, including that about buttons, hints, and shortcuts
    • Ability to remove the Typeform branding (available with premium packages)
    • Show/hide the quick progress bar
    • Add/Remove navigation arrows
    • Ability to redirect to another page when the form is completed
    • Add tracking code to be able to analyze further results after a survey is done

    Connecting To Third Parties

    Typeform integrates with close to 200 third-party software to make your life easier when it comes to making the most out of your form.

    Some examples of possible integrations include:

    • Google Docs
    • Google Forms
    • Google Analytics
    • Slack
    • Freshdesk
    • Dropbox

    You can also add webhooks that notify you (or other external services) when there are new answers to your questions, which can prove to be very helpful.

    Sharing Your Surveys

    After publishing your form, there are many ways your survey can be shared - based on your personal preference.

    Ways to share your form include:

    • Embedding it in various ways and modes that include full-page, popup, slider, popover, and more.
    • Directly sharing a link through email, social media, etc.
    • Starting a chat-style interface that anyone can access.
    • Enabling your first question to show up in an email. This then takes the user to the complete form when answering this first question.

    The Results Screen

    Finally, let's have a look at the screen that shows you the answers you'll get from your form.

    There is quite a lot of detail involved when analyzing the data collected, giving you the ability to see which device is being used the most to complete your survey.

    You can also see whether (and where) people are dropping off, so you can use their A/B testing tool to ensure that people reach the ending point successfully.

    You'll also be able to see a summary of the responses you’ve gotten, or even look at the complete answers that each and every person has provided you with.

    Typeform offers a free plan that you can try out for as long as you want to.

    This allows you to create different forms and make it available to anyone while testing out the software to understand how it works.

    Typeform is a great tool to use for your online forms and quizzes when you want to create surveys that engage your audience.

    Creating multiple forms is made easy, allowing you to build engaging surveys and questionnaires no matter what kind of information you're looking to collect from your audience.

    With many integrations with various tools, including Google Analytics, Slack, and much more, as well as the ability to create polls, collect RSVPs for events, or create quizzes with grading capabilities, Typeform offers a great tool to use in almost any kind of situation.

    With that in mind, my overall rating would be a 4.5/5 star based on the functionality, pros, and cons mentioned above.
